Unidentified Sonic Objects

Three-month long radio show By Captain Pro and the crew of Spaceship Beben, at The exhibition House of Kal at nGbK, Berlin, 2023

Unidentified Sonic Objects is an experimental radio show produced as a collaboration between Radio Kal, Spaceship Beben, RadioWeAreBornFee! and OneLove Radio.

Part of the House of Kal exhibition at nGbK Berlin, in Sep – Nov 2023, Unidentified Sonic Object transmits live from the radio room installed within the exhibition that are held together by the soft fabric architecture of artist Bino Byansi Byakuleka. The show is on air and online every weekend of the duration of the exhibition, and is hosted by Captain Pro of the Spaceship Beben/Radio Kal and General Bino of Radio WeAreBornFree!/ OneLove Radio.

Together, they set up their border and dimension crossing antennae, broadcasting sounds of the larger diasporic and refugee rights movements. Songs, conversations and imaginations flow from their joint archives every week, online and on FM radio at 88.4 MHz Berlin and 90.7 MHz Potsdam.

House of Kal Berlin is a part of the transoceanic platform Kal curated by Aziz Sohail, The Many Headed Hydra, Aziza Ahmed and Promona Sengupta.

Unidentified Sonic Objects Ep. 2

September 24, 2023

Captain Pro and General Bino do a deep dive into decolonization, intertwining stories from the House of Kal exhibition space – The Kiosk in the middle, Vicky Shahjehan’s work with Slave Island, Zahabia Khozema’s project with the Gujjar Nala in Karachi, with discussions on West African traditions in Bino’s fabric installations. They are joined by House of Kal curator Aziz Sohail and Australia-based poet Elyas Alavi, who shares his poetry with the audiences.

 


 

Unidentified Sonic Objects Ep. 3

October 1

Captain Pro and General Bino are joined by House of Kal curator Aziz, as they listen together to sound offerings from Sehan Khanna, Sabeen Omar, Ayesha Alizeh and Vinadari Lakshika, residents of the Houses of Kal in Karachi and Colombo. Bino introduces audiences to a series of field recordings and interviews from Kotti, the iconic Berlin neighbourhood that is home to migrant, working class population, and that is on the radar of the police at all times.

 


 

Unidentified Sonic Objects Ep. 4

October 8

Captain Pro and General Bino are live from the streets of Berlin, sitting on Elsenstrasse, at the open window of OneLove Foundation and talking about police violence on Palestinians protesting on Sonnenallee. Passersby join their conversations.

 


 

Unidentified Sonic Objects Ep. 5

October 15

Captain Pro and General Bino grieve together at the unfolding of a genocide and massive police violence on their doorsteps. They are joined by one of the editors of the new book Generalverdacht, who historicizes the police profiling of residents of Sonnenallee in the context of the so-called “Clan” debate in German media. Two visitors turn up at the exhibition, and an uneasy conversation about racism ensues.
